Oh my! The Gruffalo is here in Manila!

What's a Gruffalo?

A Gruffalo! Why didn't you know? He has terrible tusks, and terrible claws, and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws.

Gruffalo - the world's most-beloved monster is here in Manila to entrance our little ones to the magic and wonder of world-class theatre. This will be a perfect date with your little ones as Gruffalo is shown at the RCBC Theatre from January 27 - 31, 2016.

Based on the award-winning best seller by Julia Donaldson and Axel Sheffler, the Gruffalo tells of an adventurous journey of little Mouse as it walks through the deep dark wood where it meets the cunning Fox, the eccentric old Owl and the party mad Snake on the way.

“Irresistibly charming!” The Times, UK
“Monstrous fun!” Daily Mail, UK

Armed with only a nut map and a little courage, Mouse must outwit them all, and after all, there’s no such thing as a Gruffalo – is there?

But who is this creature with terrible claws and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws? He has knobbly knees, and turned-out toes, and a poisonous wart at the end of his nose. His eyes are orange, his tongue is black; he has purple prickles all over his back.

You and your little ones would surely enjoy the songs, laughs, rhymes, and scary fun guaranteed by little mouse and all its "friends".

“No. 1 Children’s Show!” The Independent, UK
“An altogether winning performance!” New York Times

The Gruffalo - LIVE has grown into one of the biggest and most anticipated live shows in Hong Kong and Singapore, and Manila can finally welcome the production come 2016. The Gruffalo - LIVE 2016 will be performed by a professional theatre company from the United Kingdom.

According to Matthew Gregory, Executive Producer of Hong Kong-based ABA Productions, The Gruffalo - Live 2016 will provide a fun and educational experience that the whole family can enjoy. This will indeed be a perfect opportunity for children to experience the magic of live theatre and expand their knowledge of the art.

I can't wait for Baby Charley and me to watch The Gruffalo - Live 2016 at the RCBC Theatre from January 27 - 31, 2016. The Gruffalo Live - 2016 is brought to Manila by Concertus Manila, in partnership with ABA Productions and Lunchbox Theatrical Productions and with special thanks to Nickelodeon.

Are you ready for the Disney On Ice: Magical Festival?

Are you ready for the Disney On Ice: Magical Festival?

When I was a kid, I knew Christmas was coming when the air became breezy, Christmas songs filled the air, commercials on TV were Christmas-ish, and of course, there would be Disney On Ice at the Big Dome, the latter being much awaited since it would mean Mickey Mouse and all of our beloved Disney characters here. in the Philippines!

Disney on Ice
Every year, Disney on Ice's theme varies, and this 2015, it's going to be Disney on Ice: Magical Ice Festival.

Aside from world-class skaters who make up its talented ensemble, the whole family will surely be thrilled with the Disney’s Academy Award® winning and number one animated feature film of all time Frozen, along with three Disney royal adventures - The Little Mermaid, Tangled, and Beauty and the Beast.
Frozen

The Little Mermaid

Tangled

Beauty and the Beast
According to Producer Nicole Field, “This year’s Disney On Ice is truly magical with Disney properties that are packed with heart and personality. We have princesses that are exuberant and strong-willed, but we’ve also expanded the roles of spirited supporting characters, so that they’re more prominent in the show."

For the first time on ice, we can watch our favourite Disney stars Anna and Elsa, together with hilarious snowman Olaf, rugged mountain man Kristoff, and his loyal reindeer Sven in a magical winter adventure.

“The most exciting part of bringing characters like Anna and Elsa to the ice for the first time is knowing that they have a powerful and inspiring message the resonates with audiences as the sisters discover the true meaning of love,” says producer Nicole Feld.

We're excited to see dazzling costume designs, spectacular set elements, and jaw-dropping stunts with the elements of comedy and music, which will surely make the audience fall in-love with Disney even more!

#VPartySeries: Midnight Mysteries

#VPartySeries: Midnight Mysteries

Can you survive the night?

Too old for trick or treating and random costume party this halloween?

Then break out and get ready for the ultimate Halloween event of the year! This Saturday (November 7), FOX International Channels and Victoria Court are partnering up with Breakout Philippines, the country’s premiere escape room game, to bring you an immersive horror experience like no other!

Many of us are already familiar with Breakout that has been providing a unique experience to thousands of players by trapping them in different themed rooms for 45 minutes. Players are given an interactive game to find clues and solve logic puzzles based on various storylines. There are only three rules in the game: PLAN as a team, SOLVE puzzles collaboratively, and most importantly, ESCAPE before time expires.

Our TeamHernandez is thrilled because this Halloween season, #VPartySeries: Midnight Mysteries changes the game as it is no longer enough to BREAKOUT… you must now also SURVIVE! Imagine yourself and your friends trapped in a room and will only have 45 minutes to try and survive the horror set before you.

What is more exciting is that there will be scare actors who will enter and exit the room as they please. Some will be nice and try to help you by giving you clues, while some… are not as they invade your personal space, tell you bone chilling stories, separate you from your friends and sometimes, even leave you alone in the dark.

This is still a BREAKOUT event so there is still puzzle solving involved. Your group will still choose among the 5 super thematic rooms of Victoria Court Malate which will determine the style of the overall puzzle you will have to solve: 1. The Asgard Room 2. The Casino Royale Room 3. The Bat Cave Room 4. The Candy Land Room 5. The Marakkesh Room

Excited?

Thrilled?

Scared?

Don't worry because if the scares get too extreme for you, you can use the safe word, "I want my mommy!" to signal the actors to back off and bring you back to your friends. Without judgement and unfortunately, without the clue as well. It will thus, make solving the puzzle difficult, but not impossible.

But wait there's more! Breakout Philippines is also teaming up once again with FOX to bring you The Walking Dead Breakout Room. As if time pressure is not enough, you and your friends have to escape while trying to keep your wits together as a flesh-eating walker breathes down your necks. This is happening at TriNoma Level 4 Garden Restaurants (until November 14 only) and at the Breakout Katipunan Branch.

If you have what it takes to survive, bring your friends and team up, and register through their 3 main payment channels—online, bank deposit, or in-store registration in any Victoria Court Branch.

Visit www.breakout.com.ph for more details. For more updates, please follow Breakout Philippines on Facebook and Instagram, and Victoria Court on Facebook and Instagram.

Things that have Changed when Baby Charley Entered the Picture

Having a baby means huge changes for most couples, and we're one them, too. Here are a few things that have changed in our relationship and in our lives since our little kitten, our judgmental princess watermelon, and bedspace invader Baby Charley came.

1. Our Bodies
Unlike my roommate (my husband, btw), I was not particularly conscious with how I look and would always go for comfort over fashion. However, my body has undergone a drastic change in a span of one pregnancy. I have one of those ugh muffin tops, my PUPPP's scars are STILL there (thank heavens no kamot for me), and of course my C-section battle scar is unbearable to look at. Yeah, I have gained a few (maybe more) pounds, too.

My roommate, though has gained some beer belly, still remains his charming aura. Look at him. Just look at him, and you can say there is something wrong with the equation here. Yet he, God bless his MME Awardee soul, keeps reassuring me that I still look beautiful (even if I don't fit in my old skirts anymore) because I am a good wife and an awesome mother to Baby Charley. Tissue please.

2. Where our Money Goes
Whenever we shop for groceries, which are mostly for Baby Charley, we often kid her that we used to frequent the Chips section before, but now 99% of our money is spent on her Huggies Dry, Nan HW 2, and Mustela products. Before, we would save hard to catch the latest promo of PAL or Jetstar, but now we have to save (and work) harder for her monthly immunisation bills at Makati Med.

Indeed, our priorities on where to spend our money has changed big time! Often, my roommate has to say goodbye to his vanity rituals like foot spa, pedicure, and massage, and me on books and school supplies and cat stuff so that we could save up for Baby Charley's expensive monthly needs.

We're not complaining, though, because whenever there's extra in the budget, we splurge on Ruffles and Mt. Dew!

3. Our Social Circle
Raising a child is also time-consuming, especially if it's just you and your partner in the house. Since we live alone in Makati and have decided not to have a yaya yet (somebody, save me!), my roommate and I could not say "yes" to all social gatherings we're invited to even if we really want to. Even if we desperately need to. Often, we find ourselves hanging out with married couples, too, sharing tip and experiences of raising a "feeling" toddler. We have also watched our girl friends and bros grow up and raise mini "thems" of their own.

However, we still understand that it could not just be us all the time. That's why we make sure that he still gets to hang out with his boys and I with my girls and avoid talking about Baby Charley unless they ask first because she's sooo cute and nomnomnomnom.

4. Our Routine
During the first year of our marriage, we follow a simple routine: I work from 6 am to 8pm while he works from 6pm to 4am.That's why we're basically roommates to each other because we barely see each other. We would go on occasional drinking and movie dates on weekends and travelling on long weekends. All these changed when I got pregnant and when Baby Charley was born.

Regardless of the day of the week, Baby Charley wakes up at 5am and demands playtime until 9am for her naptime. When she wakes up, 30-45 minutes later, she has to go outside for some people and cats watching. Then she would eat her meal, have more playtime, crawl, climb, practice walking, destroy furniture until she's ready for her afternoon nap at around 2pm. We will then have a tiny window of opportunity to watch Naruto, read a book, chat, or sleep.

This.happens.everyday.

It may sound tiring and boring, but since we're already used to it, it has become fun time for us, too! Suddenly, watching people and cars pass by and cats fighting and making out has become entertaining, if not interesting. Naptime mid morning could be a bliss since we, too, have to wake up at 5...sometimes 4am. Finally, seeing Baby Charley grow right before our very eyes is simply heaven.

5. Our Hearts
The biggest thing that has changed when we finally have Baby Charley in our lives is our heart. I'm not exactly a very patient person, yet I find myself waiting peacefully and calmly at the long queue by the doctor's clinic as I entertain an already inip child. Charley could be such a rascal at times and I'm sure she meant to test her limit (and my limited patience), but I would still snuggle her lovingly (and whisper, Humanda ka pag di ka na baby..joke!) and forgive her endlessly. We would also read with her over and over and over and over gain the book that she likes despite it lacking artistry and having a predictable plot. Seriously, could not even be considered literature!

My roommate even has a bigger heart of making ultimate sacrifices for our family. Moreover, he doesn't get tired to pick her up when she cries for no apparent reason, play with her from dusk till dawn, and bring her outside even when he's tired, too.

We're not counting our sacrifices for her (or how much sleep I've been deprived of when she came), but rather, we're noting how blessed we are to have Baby Charley and how our lives and we have changed for good.

Uber-ly Fantastic Ride Experience

My family and I are frequent taxi riders in the Metro, when Uber (despite its controversies and telenovela against the LTFRB) finally became available in the Philippines, my roommate (my husband, btw) and I downloaded it right away. Each of our phones has Uber just in case one's battery gets drained, which is usually mine unfortunately.

Downloading and Registering
Downloading Uber was easy! All  we did was search for it in App Store or Google Play. After downloading Uber, we created a profile account and enrolled our credit card. Here we used our BPI VISA Amore card. Don't worry because Uber will only use your card you have availed of its service. In fact, my roommate didn't use Uber until after a month he had created his account.

Types of Uber

There are two types of Ubers: UberX and Uber Black. UberX is the cheaper version of Uber cars as it uses regular cars like Vios and AUV's like Innova. According to UBER MNL Tips, UberX has a minimum and base fare of Php 40, just like our regular taxi cabs! However, it has a per minute rate of Php 2 and a per km rate of Php5.7.

Uber Black is the more high end type of Uber since it uses SUV's and according to some Uber drivers, luxury cars like Accord and some BMW's. Whoah! Its base fare is Php 90 and has a minimum fare of Php120.. It has per minute rate of Php 2.10 and a per km rate of Php 12.92.

I'm pretty sure, we're happy using just the UberX.

Requesting for your Uber
When we requested for our Uber,  we simply set our pickup location and destination. We have saved frequent places like "home" and "work" already. Before we tapped our request, we had the option to see the estimated fare so that at least we have an idea how much we would be paying. Afterwards, we confirmed our request, and soon we got a message saying that our Uber was on the way! This message included our driver's name, his contact number, his picture, the car's model, and plate number. It was that easy and convenient!

After a few minutes, if the driver found our place right away, we just hopped in and enjoyed our ride. It was like having our very own personal driver.

Pros
1) Safety - Since Uber provides details of your driver and picture, you can be sure of that he wouldn't do anything to you. Besides, you could report him right away.

2) Convenience - Seriously, no more lining up for the taxi and no more haggling and begging with kuya taxi driver  to take you from point A to point B especially during rush hours! You will just let your ride come to you as you wait in peace.

3) Cashless Transaction - Since you're using your credit card, no need to bring cash or several denominations just in case the driver doesn't have change. We all have experienced paying for more just because some taxi drivers "did not" have change for us. In Uber, you pay for your exact fare.

Cons
1) Credit Card - Well, since this is an online transaction, you first need a credit card. I don't know any other ways to pay your Uber since I think they only accept credit cards.

2) Online - You need to be online to request for an Uber, which could be a problem if you're not on PLAN. But then again, you could always ask for free wifi passwords of some establishments.

3) Surge - Ugh, when it's rush hour or if the demand for an Uber is high, Uber suddenly goes on a surge. This means that the normal fare is higher and is multiplied based on the current surge. This could go on from 1.5 to 4.5x. It could be a little expensive especially if it's traffic.
However, you do have an option to let it pass which usually happens after a couple of minutes.

Right now, we're so happy with the Uber service especially since we travel with Baby Charley.

Baby Charley's Trip to the Manila Ocean Park

Our family loves long weekends, and we make sure we make the best out of them. This long weekend, my roommate (my husband, btw) and I decided to bring Baby Charley to the Manila Ocean Park. We've been searching long on the fun and enjoyable places we could bring Baby Charley for a quick weekend trip in the Metro, and the Manila Ocean Park seems to be the perfect fit.

After our monthly check-up with our pretty pedia, Dra Pam Caedo of Makati Medical Center, for Baby Charley's 3rd PCV # 13 shot, we took a cab to the Manila Ocean Park. Fortunately, the queue wasn't that long this particular Saturday, and the guards of Makati Med have always been extra helpful to passengers with babies (they usually let us ride first! Yay!).
She loved everything!

Our ticket cost Php 430 each, and this included entrances to the Oceanarium, Fish Spa, Trails to Antarctica, Birds of Prey, and Shark and Rays Dry Encounter. In fact, this is a bit cheaper compared to their Super Splash sale online. It was Php 399 for three attractions only (Oceanarium, Jellies, and the Symphony Night Show). MOP  also have several packages available in their website. You can check them out here. Babies 2 ft and below and those who obviously can't walk get to enter the park for free.

Oceanarium
Honestly, this is the only attraction we wanted to visit since it'd be the only thing Baby Charley would enjoy. The first part of the Oceanarium featured freshwater fishes and crocodiles. The fishes weren't really colourful, but Charley enjoyed just looking at them swim! The exhibits were placed outside, and it was a little humid this afternoon, so we rushed to the second part of the Oceanarium. Too bad we missed the piranhas and the crocodiles upstairs.

The second part, the "Bahura" or reef, featured colourful (finally!) fishes that live in our coral reefs. The Bahura exhibit was a bit dark and we were afraid that Baby Charley would be afraid, or suddenly fall asleep, but she was having the time of her life looking at the various fishes in the illuminated tanks. Here you could find clownfish, eels, lionfish, and different yet absolutely colourful fishes. I could say that among the different parts of the Oceanarium, this is the part Baby Charley enjoyed most.

Afterwards, we headed to the "Laot" where there were exhibits of a sunken ship adorned with a school of large, as in huge, silver fish! Charley's eyes grew bigger at the sight of these fish circling the aquarium.

Soon, we headed to the "Karagatan", which included the main attraction, which is a 220 degree walkway tunnel! It's filled with huge rays and other fishes of different colours and sizes. Baby Charley was amazed with the rays and followed them around (sort of!).  I'm glad she didn't get scared at all.

Finally, the end of the tunnel featured the shark tank with different kinds of sharks. They were bigger than Baby Charley and still so majestic to look at.

Near the exit of the Oceanarium is the kid's learning/colouring area where kids get a colouring page for free. This was sponsored by Dong-A and Faber Castell, I think.

I don't know if it's the weather, but it was so init inside the Oceanarium. Soon, Baby Charley got a little cranky already because she hated the heat, so we needed to go to the next attraction.

If you have been to the SEA Aquarium in Singapore, which is the largest one in Asia, I think, the MOP could be a disappointment. However, Baby Charley was so amazed with the different kinds of fishes, so it was okay na rin as a "teaser" before we bring Charley to the SEA Aquarium.

Trails to Antarctica
The next on the list was the "Trails to Antarctica", a penguin exhibit and an entrance to the Snow Village, a Christmas Village with -5 degrees temperature. We saw the penguin exhibit and even watched a family fed the penguins for Php300 with picture. Since the penguins are tropical penguins, they didn't have to stay in a room with a freezing temperature. Fortunately for us because Baby Charley saw them ate, dived, and swam! Since the Snow Village was too cold for Baby Charley, we didn't enter that one as well.

Someone enjoyed watching the swimming penguins!

Birds of Prey
For me, this is the attraction that I least like. There wasn't any guide to tell us what we're supposed to see or look at. So you can say, we needed to figure out where the birds were amidst the heat and the trash. When we finally saw the birds, it was such a depressing depressing sight! We couldn't bear to take pictures because we felt very very sad for them.

If you have been to the Jurong Bird Park in SG or even the aviary in Blu Roze (Lipa City), you could see how different the caged birds were treated. We didn't stay longer than 5 minutes because the scenario really depressed us! We didn't want Charley to remember this part of the trip. We were so affected, we even emailed MOP about it. We're still awaiting for their reply.
the only happy birds in the park

Sharks and Rays Dry Encounter
Afterwards, we headed to the Sharks and Rays Dry Encounter. We really had no idea what we could expect, but there were long queues and the staff looked a little disoriented. We followed the queue to have our wrist tags checked and peered in the crowds to see what was going on. Apparently, there was this large waist-deep tank and two (2) staff holding rays (forgot to ask if they were manta rays or stingrays). Guests could touch, but not poke, these rays. It was so hot at the park and the place was so crowded that we didn't get to see where the sharks were.

Souvenir shops and food stalls were all around the park. Finally, it was time to go home. Fortunately, it started raining when we got home, so we didn't have a hard time to get a cab.

In conclusion, the Manila Ocean Park is a very appropriate and fun place to bring toddlers. They will surely enjoy the Oceanarium and the Jelly Exhibit. The other attractions are indeed for older kids. However, I would recommend the Manila Ocean Park Administration to improve their Birds of Prey Attraction.

Because Every Child is a God's Blessing

This is a speech I wrote for my sister-in-law when our darling nephew graduated from his SPED class; now, he's part of the regular Pre-K class in his school. We have been part of their family's journey, and indeed, when you shower a child with love instead of judgment, you can see who he or she truly is - a child of God.

Seven years ago, my family was blessed with a baby boy; he was such a treasure so my family and I fell in-love with him right away. But as he grew up, we noticed that he would not maintain any eye contact and preferred to climb and stay by the windows. He would also run around the house screaming, and often, he would bite his arm in depression. He would also ignore his toys and chose to play with random household items.

My initial thought was just, “Boys will be boys”.

Soon, bringing him to a new place was a challenge since he would cry, scream around, and climb on the furniture. He would just stare at the television regardless if anything was shown or not. He refused to play like the other kids, and it really broke my heart.

I wanted him to be like other babies who would coo and babble. I wanted him to look at me in the eye and say, “mommy”. I want him to be like other boys who would ride their bikes, fly kites, and play tag outside. I wanted him to watch TV with the rest of the household in peace.

I knew something was really different with our son. It was a rollercoaster feeling of sadness, denial, and frustration.

The more I have wanted him to be like the other kids his age, the more that I have failed to see who he really is --- our darling little boy. He gives the biggest hugs, the warmest kisses, the kindest smiles, the most contagious laughter, and the most sincere I love you’s. He dotes on his little sister and loves her to the moon and back. He’s that curious little boy who’s always eager to test his limits to know what else is there for him before giving everyone a heart attack. He gets excited in almost everything and can’t wait to try his hands on basically anything. He’s the favourite nephew who never gets tired of giving kisses and receiving lots and lots of love and attention from his titos and titas. Truth be told, he’s our precious little boy who makes my husband, my daughter, and me feel very, very special.

My heart melts when I hear him sing those nursery rhymes non-stop, when I look at his handwriting and his drawings on his notebook, when he spells for us, asks us if the coffee is hot or cold, and tells us how cookies and cream ice cream tastes like…when he gets excited to see her teachers and comes home with all those smiley stickers on his shirt…when he begs to go to lolo’s house in the afternoon and lets his sister hold the remote (for a while). My heart leaps with joy just seeing him loving everyone and being loved in return in his own little ways.

I still pray though that soon he would ride his bike, fly a kite, fire his Nerf gun, and play tag outside with his cousins. I long to wake up one day and listen to him say again and again how school was or how his day went. I’m looking forward to the day when he becomes, not the boy I want him to be, but the boy God has planned him to be.

And today, on his graduation, I would like to thank St. Therese of the Child Jesus Multiple Intelligence School, his teachers, and staff for journeying with our son and our family. For being extra patient with him whenever he throws his usual tantrums, for caring for him not only in his academics but also on his well-being, for being with him, and for celebrating with us the tiniest milestone in his life. More importantly, thank you dear teachers and friends, for being such blessings as you have showered him with all your love.

No words can truly explain how blessed we are for being parts of our journey so allow me to pray for you that God will continue to bless you, your family, and this wonderful institution.

Thank you and God bless everyone here.
